The story centers on three generations of the McDaragh family. Phil McDaragh was a famous, charismatic Irish poet—a man whose beautiful words masked a "shadowy" and deserting nature. The novel follows his daughter, Carmel, and her daughter, Nell, as they navigate the aftermath of his legacy. It is a study in how a person’s art and their absence can "possess" the lives of those they left behind, leaving them to pick through the "creepy" fragments of a shared, fractured past.
