The Prophesies of Nostradamus

Written by the 16th-century French physician and reputed seer Michel de Nostredame, this collection of nearly one thousand quatrains (four-line poems) is famous for its cryptic, "shadowy" language. These verses—organized into "Centuries"—are said to predict everything from the Great Fire of London and the rise of Napoleon to global catastrophes yet to come. Because the language is so metaphorical and dark, the book acts as a mirror, "claiming" the anxieties of whatever era is reading it.
